Diversity Assessment
Background
Glasgow Subway owner and operator Strathclyde Partnership for Transport is undertaking a modernisation programme which is the first full scale upgrade since 1980. The programme included the refurbishment of all stations on the network and the instruction of a new smart ticketing system.
New rolling stock has also been planned and should be on the network in 2021.
We were asked to benchmark and develop a Diversity Assessment and to assist with mainstreaming equality in the Programme.
Approach
Much of Diversity Assessment involved referring to design standards and codes, including the Department of Transport’s Code of Practice on designing accessible stations. While there is no similar guidance for underground stations, many of the principles in this Code were relevant and could be adapted.
Process
The Diversity Assessment encompassed features such as lighting, rails, signage, platform, escalators and accessibility aids such as hearing loops. Engagement with stakeholders showed that some protected groups preferred traditional ticketing systems, therefore a range of ticket buying methods were provided. The Diversity Assessment noted that this work is an iterative process, and that continued engagement with stakeholders would assist in further meeting the Public Sector Equality Duty.
